As the whale shark season wraps up at the end of April, it’s time to discover a new way to explore the vibrant marine life of the Sea of Cortez. Our Sea Safari Experience is the latest addition to our offerings and has quickly become a favorite among our staff. This adventure takes you beyond the usual tours, offering a true safari on the sea where you can swim and interact with a variety of marine animals in their natural habitat.

What Makes the Sea Safari Experience Unique
Unlike typical boat tours, this safari focuses on active interaction with marine life. We search the waters near Isla Ceralvo, a hotspot for diverse sea creatures. The goal is to swim alongside as many different animals as possible, creating unforgettable moments that go beyond sightseeing.
You can expect to encounter:
Sea lions playing and resting on rocks
Dolphins swimming alongside the boat or infront of you as we swim with them
Mobula rays massive schools gracefully gliding and leaping from the water
Migratory whales Grays, Humpbacks, Fin, Sperm and even the massive Blue
Colorful reefs teeming with fish and other marine species
Occasionally, even Orcas make an appearance!
This variety makes every trip unique and exciting.
Two Safari Options to Choose From
We offer two main safari departures to suit your location and preferences:
Safari Sur from Ensenada de Muertos
This option includes transportation to and from the departure point, making it convenient for visitors staying nearby. The eight + hour trip covers some of the richest marine areas south of Isla Ceralvo. You’ll have all snorkel gear provided, plus a delicious lunch to enjoy on board.
Safari Norte from La Paz
For those based in La Paz, the Safari Norte offers a similar six-hour adventure with the same inclusions: snorkel gear, lunch, and expert guides. This route explores the northern waters near Isla Ceralvo, where the marine life is just as abundant and diverse.
Both safaris are designed to maximize your time in the water and your chances to interact with wildlife.
What to Expect on the Water
The Sea Safari Experience is more than a boat ride. It’s an active day of exploration and swimming. Our guides are experts in the local ecosystem and know the best spots to find different animals. They also prioritize safety and respect for the wildlife.
You’ll spend much of the day snorkeling in clear waters, observing and sometimes swimming alongside:
Playful sea lions that are curious but gentle
Schools of colorful fish around vibrant coral reefs
Large schools mobula rays that leap and glide near the surface
Occasional sightings of whales and orcas, depending on the season
The boat is equipped with all necessary gear, including masks, fins, and snorkels, so you don’t have to bring your own unless you prefer to.
Tips for Making the Most of Your Sea Safari
To fully enjoy this adventure, consider these practical tips:
Wear reef-safe sunscreen to protect your skin and the marine environment.
Bring a waterproof camera or GoPro to capture underwater moments.
Dress in comfortable swimwear and bring a towel and change of clothes.
Stay hydrated and eat a light breakfast before boarding.
Listen carefully to the guides’ instructions for safety and wildlife interaction.
Why Choose a Sea Safari Over a Traditional Tour
Traditional tours often focus on sightseeing from the boat, with limited opportunities to swim or interact with animals. Our Sea Safari Experience is designed for those who want to get closer to nature and have an active, immersive day on the water.
This safari offers:
More time in the water swimming with animals
Expert guides who know where to find wildlife
Smaller groups for a more personal experience
Transportation included on the Safari Sur option for convenience
A balanced day with snorkeling, wildlife watching, and relaxation
Preparing for Your Adventure
Booking your Sea Safari is simple, but preparation helps ensure a smooth experience. Confirm your departure location and time, and check the weather forecast. The Sea of Cortez is generally calm, but conditions can vary.
If you have any medical conditions or concerns about snorkeling, discuss them with your guide before the trip. Our team prioritizes your safety and comfort.
